Opelousas Museum Hosts Tribute to Zydeco Legend Clifton Chenier

On Saturday, June 22, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Opelousas Museum, in collaboration with St. Landry Parish Tourism and Opelousas Tourism, will host a special tribute to Clifton Chenier, the iconic “King of Zydeco.” This celebration will feature a blend of art and music, including the unveiling of a larger-than-life cutout image of Clifton Chenier, designed by renowned Opelousas artist Theon Guillory. The free to attend tribute is part of the St. Landry Parish Zydeco Capital Jam, a monthly jam sessions open to players of all skill levels.

This Zydeco Jam for Clifton Chenier will be led by Chenier’s son, CJ Chenier, known as the Crown Prince of Zydeco. CJ Chenier joined his father’s band on his 21st birthday and took over the Red Hot Louisiana Band after Clifton’s passing in 1987. CJ has continued to honor his father’s legacy, earning multiple Grammy nominations for his vibrant contributions to Zydeco music.

This free-to-attend event, open to musicians of all skill levels, will be held at the Opelousas Museum, located at 315 N Main St., Opelousas, LA 70570.

In recognition of Clifton Chenier’s profound impact on music, the Louisiana State Legislature designated Opelousas as the Zydeco Music Capital of the World in 2000. Further cementing his legacy, June 25 was declared Clifton Chenier Day by the state legislature in 2021. Born on June 25, 1925, near Opelousas, Chenier revolutionized Zydeco music with his energetic and innovative style, earning a Grammy in 1983 and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Artist Theon Guillory, who created the tribute cutout, has been celebrated for his artistic contributions, including his work in the Opelousas Main Street’s Fiddle Mania public art exhibit in 2012. Guillory has twice won The Daily Advertiser’s Mardi Gras Cover contest and was selected as the poster artist for the Games of Acadiana.

This tribute to Clifton Chenier not only honors his enduring influence on Zydeco music but also brings together the community to celebrate a shared cultural heritage. Sponsored by St. Landry Parish Tourism, the event promises an afternoon of lively music and heartfelt remembrance.
