Looking to ditch the Halloween madness for a bit this weekend in favor of some feel-good neighborhood love?
Come out on Saturday, November 1, to second line and celebrate the one year anniversary of Ooh Poo Pah Doo, an awesome little music club and beloved neighborhood haunt in the Treme.
The parade will depart from Jackson Square at noon and make its way to the bar, located on Orleans at North Prieur, for a music-filled after party that will last well into the night.
Food and champagne toasts are complimentary, and there is no cover charge.
Known for being the home base of Trombone Shorty, James Andrews, and Trumpet Black, all nephews of the bar’s owner, Ooh Poo Pah Doo is the perfect spot to hear 24-carat New Orleans music in a warm, familial atmosphere.
Saturday’s festivities will feature performances by regulars James Andrews, Trumpet Black, and Guitar Slim Jr., as well as all sorts of guest performers that are sure to cycle on and off stage throughout the night.
It’s the kind of venue where there’s a very fine line between audience and performer.
Bar owner Judy Hill is a talented singer and avid hostess who had been anxious to open a music bar for several years.
What’s more, she’s the daughter of famed R&B and blues singer Jessie Hill and part of one of the old New Orleans musical families. She she aims to honor this legacy with her new venue, which is named after her father’s greatest hit.
She designed the tasteful, unpretentious interior of the bar herself and covered the walls in strings of lights and pictures of her many musical friends and family members.
“I wanted it to be about the family,” she says. “That’s how I was raised. Friendly, cozy, laid back, and lots of live music.”
From family to food, music to history, Ooh Poo Pah Doo really has it all. With an establishment like this on her hands, Hill is sure to be hosting the first anniversary party of many!
