The inaugural Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival has unveiled the lineup for its PoWoW! superjam, and artists with New Orleans connections are well-represented in the band.
For starters, George Porter Jr and Zigaboo Modeliste of legendary funk pioneers The Meters will be a part of the group, as will the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Additionally, the band will be co-led by Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler, who has become involved in the local music and arts scene since taking up residence in New Orleans over a year ago.
The PoWoW will also feature Eric Krasno and Neal Evans of Jazz Fest favorites Soulive, along with rising jazz star Kamasi Washington (who is currently scheduled to play four shows during this year’s Jazz Fest). The lineup is rounded out by John Oates, singer-songwriter Miguel and DJ Chris Karns. Of course, there will be plenty of surprise special guests as well.
Expectations for Okeechobee’s promised superjams have been pretty high seeing as the festival has been co-developed by Paul Peck, the brains behind Bonnaroo’s famed SuperJams. According to a Facebook post, the PoWoW “will focus largely on epic reinterpretations of beloved classic songs woven together with modern music by this incredible live band for a raging dance party. The goal of the PoWow! is for artists and audience to share a transcendent experience of connection and shared energy as these stars align at Okeechobee for the very first time!”
“We believe that the festival culture in the US is at a crossroads,” Peck said in a September press release. “People are looking for meaningful festival experiences and events where they can connect with a true sense of inspiration and community. Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival will offer something truly special. Sunshine Grove is the most naturally beautiful festival site in the country and we’re transforming it into a magical new world of music, food, art, and creativity. I can’t wait to share with fans what we’re cooking up.”
The Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival will make its debut March 4-6 in Okeechobee, FL. The event will include headlining sets from Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar and Skrillex, plus appearances by Bassnectar, Robert Plant, Odesza, Daryl Hall & John Oates, The Avett Brothers, Future, Miguel, Fetty Wap, Ween and many more.
