On Saturday, August 25, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art will celebrate its 15th “birthday” from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. with a free admission day featuring kid and adult art activities, scavenger hunts, yoga, music, food and more.
Performances by Young Audiences’ Dave James, Dancing Grounds, the Ogden Museum’s Teen Docent Puppet Theater and DJ Heelturn will take place throughout the day, while La Cocinita and Fete au Fete food trucks will sell food from noon until 2 p.m. Serving up free treats will be Plum Street Snoballs and, beginning at 3 p.m., a cocktail hour will begin featuring a specialty cocktail for the anniversary.
Of course, art will play an integral role in the day’s festivities. Works of art currently on view at the Museum will inspire activities running from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Guests will have an opportunity to create watercolor paintings and collages or learn about kinetic sculptures.
Artist and educator Mikhayla Anderson will lead a free yoga class for all levels at 11 a.m. in the Patrick F. Taylor Library. Mindful breathing and dynamic movement inspired by work from the Louisiana Contemporary exhibit will be the focus of the class. A drop-in drawing session for adults takes place at 2 p.m. and at 2:30, they can take part in workshops for letterpress card making and crafting.
A scavenger hunt throughout the Museum’s exhibitions will take guests on either a self-guided tour or a group tour led by a docent. Salazar: Portraits of Influences in Spanish New Orleans, 1785 – 1802, Louisiana Contemporary, Presented by The Helis Foundation, Doris Ulmann: From the Highlands to the Lowlands, as well as works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection will be on view.
“We hope this Anniversary Celebration of Ogden Museum’s 15th year will serve as an opportunity for the community to experience all that the Museum has to offer,” says William Pittman Andrews, Executive Director of the Ogden Museum. “This free admission day will provide people of all ages the chance to participate in a variety of programming and create their own connections with our institution.”
