It’s another exciting week in New Orleans with plenty of live music and cultural events to help keep you entertained! Check out our OffBeat Weekly Picks (September  5 – 11).

On Thursday, September 5th, at 7 p.m., The Broadside will host “Music for Mental Health,” a benefit concert presented by Loyola University New Orleans School of Music and Theatre Professions that will take place at the Broadside NOLA. The event will feature performances by Mia Borders, John Curry, Arsène Delay, Mike Doussan and Will Murry. This songwriters’ round aims to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. Proceeds will support the Brett Thomas Doussan Foundation, an organization dedicated to mental health advocacy. You can learn more or purchase tickets here.

Also on Thursday, September 5th, at 7:30 p.m., the James Markway Quartet will celebrate the release of their new CD with a special performance at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro. Enjoy an evening of New Orleans’ finest jazz artists doing what they do best: naturally and creatively coming together to share the music they love. Fans of jazz are invited to experience the group’s latest work live. Tickets are priced at $25, and can be purchased here.

Le Petit Theatre will kick off its 108th season with the 10th Annual Curtain Call Ball on Friday, September 6th, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.. This gala, which has been dubbed “the most entertaining gala of the year,” will feature cocktails and cuisine at Tableau, followed by live Broadway performances at Le Petit Theatre. This year’s event includes a special musical performance by Tony nominee Betsy Wolfe. Funds raised will support the theatre’s mission to provide high-quality theatrical performances and educational opportunities for the community. You can learn more or purchase tickets here.

Childish Gambino, an alter ego of artist Donald Glover, returns to New Orleans on Saturday, September 7th, as part of “The New World Tour.” Glover, is known for his boundary-pushing work in music, acting and writing. As a musician, Gambino has garnered critical acclaim and Grammy awards for his genre-defying albums, blending hip-hop, funk and soul, with hits like “This Is America.” Fans may want to attend this concert as Glover claims to be retiring the Childish Gambino character and this may be the final time to see him live in New Orleans. The concert takes place at the Smoothie King Center at 8 p.m., featuring special guest WILLOW. You can purchase tickets here.

Rabadash Records is set to mark its 40th anniversary with a grand celebration at Chickie Wah Wah in New Orleans on Saturday, September 7 starting at 8 p.m. The event brings together a stellar lineup of performers including John Autin, Serabee, Elizma, Big Daddy O, John Lisi, Ingrid Lucia, Buzzy Beano, Laine Bleu, Jea, Todd Lemoine, Chris Robert, Tom McDermott, Johnny J, Jim Lockwood, Bishop and more. Getting a chance to hear the New Orleans roots-rock band (with a very Latin influence) The Iguanas is not as common as it used to be. These days they are on the road most of the time, but this weekend on September 7 at 9 p.m., they will play some sets at BJ’s Lounge in the Bywater.  If  you haven’t been to one of their shows, get ready to party. On Sunday, September 8 at 8 p.m., Café Istanbul will present the Rajasthani Caravan, featuring famous nomadic folk artists from Rajasthan, India. This unique cultural event will include folk tunes, snake charmers, and ancient love songs performed by members of the Manganiyar and Kalbelia tribes. The night will be filled with high-energy Rajasthani folk dance, including Ghoomar and Kalbelia, along with other traditional performances. Tickets are priced at $20. You can learn more here.
