It’s time for Purple Takeover New Orleans 2024, a celebration of Prince’s birthday from June 7 – 9, presented by DJ Soul Sister. The festivities begin on Friday with Prince Day at Ace Hotel featuring DJ Soul Sister and DJ Vintage, followed by a 40th-anniversary screening of “Purple Rain” at Prytania Theatre. Saturday highlights include a Prince Celebration at Tipitina’s with DJ Soul Sister and the Lovesexy Dancers, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Covenant House New Orleans. Chickie Wah Wah will feature a duet performance by Mahmoud Chouki and Oscar Rossignoli on Thursday, June 6, at 8 p.m.. This evening promises a blend of world music and jazz, showcasing the virtuosic talents of guitarist Chouki and pianist Rossignoli. On Thursday, June 6, Snug Harbor will host the CD release of Brian Quezergue, an acclaimed New Orleans bassist and the son of legendary composer Wardell Quezergue. Known for his versatility across genres, Brian has performed with a diverse range of artists including the Wild Magnolias, saxophonist Kidd Jordan, clarinetist Alvin Batiste, and trumpeter Clyde Kerr Jr. Brian has also been involved with the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp since 1995, progressing from a student to a bass instructor. Third Coast Entertainment presents the third annual PRIDE at The Broadside on Friday, June 7, starting at 7 p.m. The celebration will feature performances by LGBTQ+ fronted bands including DJ Lady Lavender, Sean Hobbes + The Hi Res, Carolyn Broussard and John Boutté. Attendees can enjoy an art market with local vendors, free on-site HIV testing by Crescent Care, giveaways and a special signature beverage. The NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a tour stop at Toulouse Theatre on Friday, June 7. This event will feature performances from both local and touring contest participants and winners, highlighting emerging musical talent. New Orleans has had notable Tiny Desk participants, including Tank and the Bangas, whose 2017 win catapulted them to national fame with their vibrant, genre-blending performances. The 38th annual Creole Tomato Festival takes place June 8-9 at the French Market in New Orleans.
