New Orleans music will perhaps never leave the upper echelon of academic and industry conversation. And really, who can blame the music heads? New Orleans music is without a doubt an infinitely fascinating, incomparable artform that has penetrated nearly every single genre and sub-genre of music out there… yet remains much of a mystery to so many.
After Hurricane Katrina we certainly saw a storm panel discussions, interviews and other national and international conversations about what was going to happen to New Orleans music in the wake of such disaster. It seems though, that even nearly eight years later, this is still a hot topic… as the annual progressive music, film and technology conference, South by Southwest has chose to organize a “New Orleans Music Today” panel discussion at this year’s mega-gathering of music and tech heads, taking place March 7 – 17 in Austin, TX.
OffBeat’s publisher and fearless leader, Jan Ramsey, has been asked to represent New Orleans music media on this panel among other fellow New Orleanian music chiefs, Scott Billington (VP/A&R, Rounder Records), Truth Universal (Hip Hop Artist), Wild Wayne (Commercial Radio On-Air Personality, Q93FM and Ben Jaffe (Creative Director, Preservation Hall Jazz). With over 25 years of experience tirelessly forging self-made territory for New Orleans music and culture, we are geeked to hear what Ramsey and our other New Orleanians have to say about “New Orleans Music Today.”
