At this year’s Folk Alliance International Conference OffBeat will be presenting two showcases co-sponsored by WWOZ 90.7 FM.
If you’re attending the festival, on Wednesday, January 22 at 8 p.m. you can catch Drummer Benny Amón who just released his debut album and has been touring around the world when he’s not sitting in with the Preservation Hall Band. After him, at 9 p.m. is two-time Grammy nominee Sean Ardoin who comes from a family of serious Cajun musicians actively performing since the 1920s. He’ll be playing the sound he coined, Kreole Rock and Soul. 9:45 p.m. features Louisiana supergroup The Revelers and its swamp pop sound.
On Saturday, January 25, the lineup is even more stacked. The event kicks off at 4:40 p.m. with youthful, high energy Swamp Pop/ Country/ Soul band, the Pine Leaf Boys. At 5:30, we’ve got French language Poet Laureat Zachary Richard, who appeared on our cover back in 1999 and has been going strong these decades since with 20+ albums to his name. Prepare to put your dancing shoes on at 6:20 for Grammy nominated Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, one of America’s hottest accordionists and certainly one of its most entertaining. At 7:10 p.m. Lakou Muzik, a group that focuses on the cultural and musical connections between Haiti and New Orleans will take the stage. Closing the night out, at 8 p.m. is the spectacular Grammy-nominated Mardi Gras Indian Brass Band, Cha Wa.
