Thanksgiving may be a week away, but it doesn’t mean you have to wait that long to rejoice over a great feast. This Sunday (November 24), marks the seventh annual Oak Street Po-Boy Festival. From 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. more than 30 local restaurants will post up on Oak Street between Carrollton and Leake Avenues in celebration of New Orleans’ over-stuffed, French bread sandwiches. To better accommodate the expectedly large crowd, this free festival has increased its footprint to include more attractions on streets adjacent to Oak, most notably Leonidas which will play host to a new Food Truck Village.
Earlier this week, we took a look at the festival’s menu and vendors. Just as in years past, the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival will also cater those seeking to feast their ears on some good music. Hometown acts Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes, Los Po-Boy-Citos, Flow Tribe and the Rebirth Brass Band as well as Mexico’s Pilaseca will get down on the fest’s main stage, located at intersection of Oak and Eagle Streets. Oak Street’s storied Maple Leaf Bar will serve as the festival’s second source for live music and feature sets from Alexis & the Samurai, Eric Johanson, Chris Mulé & the Perpetrators, and Terence Higgins’ Swampgrease. Situated at the corners of Leonidas and Plum Streets, Po-Boy Fest’s third stage will showcase music from several brass bands.
Throughout the day, a series of lectures covering the po-boy’s history among other topics will be held at the Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church on the corner of Dublin Street and North Carrollton Avenue. On the opposite side of the street at the corner of South Carrollton Avenue and Oak Street, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School will operate as a children’s center. Both areas will also double as collection centers for non-perishable food items donated as part of a food drive Po-Boy Fest will conduct for Second Harvest Food Bank’s benefit.
Several eating stations will be set up along the Oak Street corridor as will multiple drink stations. Remember to swing by Po-Boy Fest’s information center and pickup a map and schedule at OffBeat’s booth at the corner of Oak and Cambronne Streets. The festival’s main eating and dining area is there as well.
