The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) will kick off its five-week John Waters Film Festival this Friday, July 21. Presented in partnership with the museum’s exhibition Pride of Place: The Making of Contemporary Art in New Orleans, the event will feature a series of screenings at the Stern Auditorium every Friday through August 18.
The festivities will get started with Waters’ obscene 1972 black comedy Pink Flamingos, cult classic that was originally released with the tagline, “An exercise in poor taste.” Next up will be screenings of Polyester (July 28), Hairspray (August 4), Cry Baby (August 11), and Pecker (August 18). Attendees will also be able to view some of Waters’ photographs, which are currently on display at NOMA as part of the Pride of Place exhibition.
All of the films will be screened at 7pm, though Pink Flamingos will be shown again at 9pm due to high demand. No one under the age of 18 will be admitted to Pink Flamingos, as the film is rated NC-17. Additionally, those that attend the 7pm screening of Pink Flamingos will be treated to pre-movie performances by Alfred Banks and Cool Nasty as part of the Friday Nights at NOMA series.
Tickets for the screenings are on sale now. Admission will be free for NOMA members.
