Over the course of the year, musician Paul Sanchez and screenwriter Colman deKay’s opera and album Nine Lives has blossomed into one of the most celebrated New Orleans releases of 2011. On stage, the musical adaption of Dan Brown’s 2009 book of the same title takes the form of a pop opera. Backed by a cast of New Orleans’ finest, Sanchez and company brought Nine Lives to life Saturday, October 22 at Tipitina’s, French Quarter for the musical’s first performance since its premiere at Le Petit Theatre in May during Jazz Fest.
Among others, the all-star ensemble at Tipitina’s included Matt Perrine on bass and tuba, Alex McMurray on guitar, banjo and vocals, Paul Sanchez on vocals and guitar, Larry Sieberth on piano and keyboard, Shamarr Allen on trumpet and vocals, and Wayne Maureau on drums. Husband-and-wife duo Matt Perrine and Debbie Davis acted as musical and vocal director, respectively.
