On the same day LaToya Cantrell was making women’s history in New Orleans, chef Nina Compton was making some in Chicago. On May 7, both she and Freret restaurant Cure took home top awards from the James Beard Foundation in separate categories.
Ms. Compton, whose work at the Caribbean-inspired Compère Lapin on Tchoupitoulas earned her gold, was named Best Chef in the South, which includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Puerto Rico. Cure was named Outstanding Bar Program in the category presented by Woodford Reserve Bourbon. New Orleans also appeared in a list of the 2018 James Beard Foundation Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America Inductees; Commander’s Palace co-owners Lally Brennan and Ti Adelaide Martin earned the honor.
As previously reported by OffBeat, New Orleans’ Dong Phuong Bakery and its owner Linh Tran Garza were recognized by the James Beard Foundation for its America’s Classics honor.
Congrats to Nina Compton, Cure and all the winners of this year’s awards! For the full list of winners, click here.
