This week’s New Releases in New Orleans highlights new jazz fusion, blues, R&B, EDM, punk and much more. It’s December and holiday music is back in full swing with Mariah Carey filling every department store across the country. But if you’re tired of the old holiday tunes or holiday music in general, there’s plenty of new music from New Orleans to check out.

Joesph Crachiola/Stephen McMullin: Crachiola​/​McMullin Volume One (Independent)
Recorded in Joseph Crachiola’s home in the 9th Ward, this album experiments with jazz, fusing it with elements of New Orleans R&B, soul and blues.

Evil Tree: Moon Maniac (Sick Thoughts Records)
A heavy fusion of black metal and hardcore, Evil Tree’s 13-minute EP rips with d-beat drums, snarling vocals and garagey guitars.

Joy: Beacon of Excess (Girlsville Records)
Pasha Jovanovic’s project fuses pop and dance music with punk’s noisy edge and politics, creating an album that is sonically diverse while not entirely inaccessible for those less into heavy music. With contributions from Special Interest’s Ruth Mascelli, New Orleans’ EDM and punk crossover in the underground continues to gather more momentum.

Lil Jodeci: Lil Jodeci House Edits (Independent)
Underground DJ Lil Jodeci released an EP of edits that show off his talent as a house, bounce and EDM beatmaker while keeping creative dance music alive in New Orleans.

Putamayo: World Party 3 (Putumayo World Music)
New Orleans-based record label Putamayo World Music released an upbeat world music tape with sounds from Brazil, classic ska from the UK, Guadeloupean dance music and Congolese pop.

Sageiskami: 7 (Indepenent)
New Orleans-based madman Sageiskami brings more lo-fi breakcore, jungle, trap with their latest EP sounding like the theme music for some dystopian cyberpunk future.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd: Trouble Is… 25 (Provogue Records)
The Shreveport singer-songwriter returns with his 10th studio album, a reimagining of the modern blues hit “Trouble Is” released 25 years ago.
