New Orleans has been named the host city for the upcoming Red Bull Dance Your Style National Final USA, an all-styles street dance competition finishes its U.S. tour in the city on May 21-22. Winners from six regional qualifiers will convene to ignite the dance floor and win the hearts of the crowd. This year’s event will also spotlight the rich dance and music traditions of New Orleans with participatory workshops and community events.
Red Bull Dance Your Style is a global all-styles street dance event series with a unique battle format. From hip hop to house, to locking to popping, participating dancers will need to impress spectators and ultimately win their votes.
The weekend kicks off with a heated pre-final qualifier at House of Blues on Saturday, May 21. Semi-finalists from Boston, Tampa, Chicago, Washington D.C, Oakland, and Atlanta will battle a roster of world-class dancers, including Lily Frias, Nick Fury, Tyler D Creator, and Toyin, in a head-to-head, bracket-style tournament for spots in the final competition to be held on Sunday, May 22. With no planned choreography or pre-selected music, America’s best street dancers face the ultimate improvisational test as they seamlessly transition between hip-hop, house, waacking, turfing, krumping, popping, locking, footwork, jookin’, and more. The results will be as unpredictable as their kinetic freestyles, with the audience judging the competition in real-time.
The Red Bull Dance Your Style National Final USA takes place the following evening at Generations Hall, a repurposed 1820s sugar refinery located in Warehouse District. Ultimately, the crowd determines who will represent the U.S. in the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final. Pell will host the competition as DJ mikeyoffline spontaneously chooses tracks engaging the dancers and the audience with a mix of unforgettable chart-toppers and timeless jams.
In addition to the competition, the weekend offers curated parties, performances, workshops, and showcases helmed by celebrated dancers, musicians, and DJs that highlight the storied history and eclectic vibe of New Orleans. Jookin’ legend Ladia Yates will teach the essentials of freestyle while Skip and Flash, bounce choreographers and dancers, will explain how to win the crowd, and South Korean popping phenom Dassy delves into all-style battle strategy.
