New Orleans will honor the late Walter “Wolfman” Washington with two events in May, celebrating the life and legacy of the renowned guitarist, singer, and bandleader who contributed significantly to the city’s music scene for over five decades.
The first event will be a Jazz Funeral on May 4, officially proclaimed Walter “Wolfman” Washington Day at Jazz Fest. The procession will start with adding his statue to Ancestors Square, followed by a Second Line ending with an all-star tribute to him in the Jazz Fest Blues Tent at 4:10 p.m.
The second event will be the dedication of the Walter “Wolfman” Washington Memorial Park on May 13 at 4 p.m. Formerly known as Fortier Park, this new public space is located on Esplanade at Ponce de Leon. The Roadmasters will host a legion of New Orleans musicians to celebrate the life and music of Walter Wolfman Washington.
Walter Washington passed away on December 22, 2022, at the age of 79. He was known for his soulful guitar playing and powerful vocals, and he performed with many prominent musicians throughout his career, including Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, and Johnny Adams. He also released numerous albums as a solo artist, earning critical acclaim for his distinctive style and sound.
