The New Orleans Jazz Museum will come alive with the vibrant sights, sounds and tastes of Mexican culture as the Consulate of Mexico in New Orleans hosts a celebration of Mexican Independence. On September 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., guests are invited to join the festivities at the historic museum for “El Grito” – a unique event that promises an evening of music, food and cultural commemoration.
Marking one of the most important days in Mexico’s history, “El Grito” serves as a call to unity and a celebration of freedom. The event is rooted in the annual commemoration of “El Grito de Dolores,” the historic proclamation made by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1810, which ignited Mexico’s war for independence. The tradition has been passed down through generations, embodying the spirit of resistance and the fight for liberty.
Attendees of the event will be treated to an immersive cultural experience, with live mariachi music setting the festive tone for the evening. Adding to the celebration, local food vendors will offer a range of authentic Mexican dishes, showcasing the rich and diverse flavors that Mexican cuisine is known for. From savory tacos to spicy salsas and sweet churros, the culinary offerings promise to transport taste buds straight to the heart of Mexico.
By hosting “El Grito,” the Consulate of Mexico and the New Orleans Jazz Museum are offering a special opportunity for the local community to connect, learn and celebrate Mexican culture in a warm, inclusive environment.
With free admission, the event welcomes all to join in this festive occasion. The organizers encourage people of all backgrounds to come together, celebrate diversity, and embrace the spirit of Mexico’s independence.
This event is just one of many celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month. Running through Friday, October 25th, you can also enjoy weekly live music performances. The concerts will be held inside our Education Center every Friday @ 2 p.m. with two special Balcony shows in the museum’s courtyard on Tuesday, September 24th & Tuesday, October 15th starting at 5:00 p.m. To learn more about those events go here.
