New Orleans Po Boy Shops Rally to Help Guy’s Po-Boys

After an intoxicated driver crashed a pickup truck into his restaurant in December of last year, Guy’s Po-Boys owner Marvin Matherne was forced to repair his shop at great expense. This weekend, a number of his “competitors” will lend a helping hand when they throw a benefit party for the Uptown establishment, which was also severely damaged by a fire in 2007.

NOLA.com reports that Parkway Bakery, Tracey’s, Ye Olde College Inn, Killer Po-Boys, Parasol’s and, of course, Guy’s will all participate in the fundraiser. The street party is set for noon to 4pm this Saturday, June 18 in front of Guy’s Po-Boy at the intersection of Magazine and Valmont Streets.

Each restaurant will offer a different po-boy, while the Hot Club of New Orleans will be on hand to play some music. Entry to the event will cost $15 and includes a bag of Zapp’s chips, a soda and a chance to sample the various sandwiches.

New Orleans funk powerhouse Galactic has even offered an endorsement of the party, noting that Guy’s offers a sandwich that was created by drummer Stanton Moore. Their statement reads:

This is the kind of spirit we need in our world – please check out the party for Guy’s Po-Boys this Saturday, June 18th. Since Guy’s Po Boys is located directly next door to the original Galactic Band House on Magazine St., it and its owner Marvin have been dear to our hearts for 20+ years. Marvin was one of our earliest supporters – bringing over extra food and checking out us crazy kids thinking we can be a popular funk band. He kept us fed and inspired us to take on the world, he even has a po boy that Stanton Moore created – “The Bomb” (grilled fish, grilled shrimp, white and yellow cheese, dressed).

Guy’s Po-Boys is open 11am to 4pm from Monday through Saturday.
