This Friday night at House of Blues, Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra will perform the entirety of their 2009 album Book One. While it has toured extensively in support of the album, this will be the first time the NOJO performs Book One in New Orleans.
Book One won a 2010 Grammy for Best Large Ensemble Jazz Album. The recording showcases Mayfield’s talent as a bandleader and orchestral arranger and features performances from an array of great New Orleans musicians, including trumpeter Barney Floyd, vocalists Johnaye Kendrick, Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown and John Boutte, and clarinetist Evan Christopher.
The performance will kick off Mayfield’s monthly “Hometown Concert” series. On February 14 at the Contemporary Arts Center, the group will present “Shakespeare in Love”, a Valentine’s Day tribute to Duke Ellington accompanied by Shakespeare’s love sonnets.
