Back-to-School Music Education Open House

On August 10, 2024, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with the New Orleans Music Education Collaborative (NOMEC) and NOLA Public Schools, will host a Back-to-School open house. The event, set to take place at Mahalia Jackson Elementary School from 10 AM to 1 PM, will highlight a range of after-school music education programs available throughout the city.

This open house offers prospective students and their families an opportunity to explore various music programs, watch live performances, and register for classes. The event is free and open to the public, although registration is required.

Participating organizations include Make Music NOLA, Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, Trombone Shorty Foundation, Second Line Arts Collective, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Heritage School of Music, Roots of Music, and NOLA Public Schools. Each organization will have representatives available to answer questions and provide information about their unique programs.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s initiatives, including the Back to School Jam and Trumpet Summit, are part of a broader mission to enhance the community through music education. These events aim to inspire and educate the youth, fostering a deep appreciation for music beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Earlier this summer, the Trumpet Summit workshop provided young trumpet players with the opportunity to learn from esteemed musicians, including members of the Trumpet Mafia, saxophonist Derek Douget, and Asia Muhaimin, the Director of Fine Arts for NOLA Public Schools. This workshop highlighted the foundation’s commitment to nurturing young talent and providing quality music education.

NOMEC is a consortium of nonprofits dedicated to ensuring access to quality music education for students in the New Orleans area. Partner organizations work closely with NOLA Public Schools to offer comprehensive music instruction. The Back-to-School open house serves as an ideal occasion for families to connect with these programs and find the perfect fit for their child’s musical interests.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, which also presents the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, uses proceeds from the festival and other fundraising efforts to support educational, economic development, and cultural enrichment programs year-round.
