The New Orleans City Council unanimously passed a resolution declaring Allen Toussaint’s birthday—January 14th—to be Allen Toussaint Day. The resolution was authored by Councilmember Susan G. Guidry of District A, and was passed earlier today.

“Our artists and musicians are our ambassadors, as their talents, hard work, and genius creates the culture for which we are internationally known. Their travels share that culture with countless individuals and communities, and their successes and creations infuse our city with a vibrancy and soul unmatched elsewhere in the world.  Allen served our city as one of our finest ambassadors,” said Guidry.

As previously reported, Toussaint passed away last November. His death shocked the people of New Orleans and music fans everywhere, and numerous memorials were held in the weeks after his passing, including a massive, star-studded tribute at the Orpheum Theater.

NOLA.com reports that Toussaint’s daughter Alison Toussaint-Lebeaux thanked the council and the city at today’s meeting, saying, “I just want to say thank you. He loved the city more than life itself, and anytime he left, he wanted to know how long he’d be gone from the city. It will be a moment we will never forget.”

The publication also noted that Councilmember Jason Williams floated the idea of finding a more permanent way for the city to pay tribute to Toussaint.

“I hope we can find a way to honor him the way he honored us,” he reportedly said.
