New Orleans Ballet Association Reveals 2023-24 Main Stage Dance Season

The New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA), which recently revealed its free fall after school programs, has announced its forthcoming 2023-24 Main Stage Dance Season at the Mahalia Jackson Performing Arts Center. NOBA’s goal is to present a diverse and culturally significant array of dance performancesthat showcase a mix of established as well as emerging talents from the global dance scene. The season will begin on October 21.

The inaugural performance on October 21 will feature Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Led by artistic directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, the company is renowned for its innovative approach to contemporary ballet. The program will include a world premiere NOBA-commissioned piece set to live music by jazz artist and this month’s OffBeat Magazine cover artist, Chief Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott). The evening will also encompass Ballad Unto, choreographed to J.S. Bach’s music, and LOVE ROCKS, set to the music of Lenny Kravitz.

Compañia Nacional de Danza (CNdD), Spain’s national dance company, will make a rare appearance on January 20, 2024, after a 22-year hiatus. Under Artistic Director Joaquín De Luz, CNdD will present a mixed repertoire, including White Darkness by former artistic director Nacho Duato; Sad Case by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot; and Passengers Within, choreographed by De Luz to Philip Glass’s compositions.

The well-loved Les Ballets de Monte Carlo will return on March 2, 2024, with their reinterpretation of Swan Lake, titled LAC. The production, directed by Jean-Christophe Maillot, offers a modernized rendition of the classic ballet while retaining its essential narrative. The performance will be the sole presentation of its kind in the nation.

New Orleans Ballet Association’s season will conclude on April 20, 2024, with Parsons Dance and The Allen Toussaint Orchestra. Parsons Dance will present a custom program including Caught, a technically demanding piece, and Swing Shift, described by the choreographer as a study of speed and partnering. The evening will culminate with a tribute to the 10th anniversary of Parsons’ work Whirlaway, accompanied by The Allen Toussaint Orchestra.

Individual tickets for all productions will go on sale from Tuesday, September 5. Interested individuals can join NOBA’s email list and visit their official website for the latest ticketing information and subscription details.
