In collaboration with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival’s Laura Westbrook, New Orleans Airlift will present a brand new collaborative structure at Jazz Fest 2018. The Music Box will be an extension of the Airlift’s Music Box Village, which is both musical architecture and large-scale public artwork.
For the first time, Airlift will bring this large-scale public artwork to Jazz Fest, where folks will get a glimpse at the instrument-building and installation process. Plus, Music Box at Jazz Fest will offer interactive educational workshops that are friendly for all age groups. Surprise cameos from artistic and musical friends and family of the Airlift community will also be included.
The schedule for Music Box at Jazz Fest is as follows:
Friday, April 27 – Saturday, April 28:
Music Box sound sculpture “Porch Life” with artists, designers and fabricators on site. 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
Created by the Airlift team – Alita Edgar, Christian Repaal, Delaney Martin and Taylor Shepherd with assistance from Leah Hennessy, Marshall Hawks & Jay Pennington – “Porch Life” is an explorable multi-level structure featuring seven new instrumental features. “Porch Life” takes inspiration from the gathering places that exist between indoors and outdoors, twilight hours spent together as daytime falls into nighttime, and the evolutionary life of a house that is no longer intact over time.
Sunday, April 29:
Education Workshops for All Ages: songwriting and improv at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Thursday, May 3 – Sunday, May 6:
Education Workshops for All Ages: songwriting and improv at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Thursday Workshops at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. only.
During Jazz Fest, Music Box Village (located in the Bywater) will host a series of performances between April 27 and May 5. Mike Dillon, Nolatet, The Residents and more will appear. For information on those events, please click here.
