New Orleans, a city more known for its brass than woodwinds, will host the National Flute Convention, presented by the National Flute Association (NFA), beginning August 8 at the Marriott Hotel on Canal Street. Thousands of flutists from all of the country will invade the city to attend this year’s convention, whose theme is “Confluence of Cultures and Perseverance of Spirit.” The convention will feature spirited programming for solo and flute choir recitals, masterclasses and workshops, the NFA’s world-renowned flute competitions, and flute exhibitions galore.
Beginning on the morning of Wednesday, August 8, the convention will run all the way through the weekend, ending on the evening of Sunday the 12. With this year’s convention, the NFA aims to celebrate the melting pot of New Orleans, a prime example of the convention’s “Confluence of Cultures” theme. Also according to theme, the convention will use the power of the flute to celebrate the perseverance and resilience of the New Orleans spirit. In addition to the numerous solo and group flute recitals, the convention will feature the inaugural performance of the Swamp Jazz and Gumbo Flute Orchestra, a newly assembled ensemble of NFA members who will salute the music of New Orleans.
The NFA, founded in 1972, is a not-for-profit organization based out of Santa Clarita, CA. The largest flute organization in the world, the NFA boasts 6,000 members from more than 50 countries. Guided by its goal to encourage a higher standard of artistic excellence for the flute, members include leading soloists, orchestral players, jazz and world music performers, adult amateurs and students of all ages.
To attend to the National Flute Convention, you must be a registered member of the NFA. Jethro Tull t-shirts are optional. For more information on how to become a member, visit the NFA website here.
