The Buku Music + Art Project, better known as Buku Fest, released its second round of line-up announcements today, including confirmation that ’90s-era hip-hop icon Nas will headline one of the nights. Moreover, the New York City rap star is slated to perform his seminal album, Illmatic, in its entirety to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1994 LP’s release. For many fest-goers, this may be the first opportunity to hear the classic album live.
Though this will be Nas’ first appearance at Buku Fest, it will not be his first at a popular New Orleans music festival of late. Two years ago, the acclaimed rapper closed out the main stage one night at the Voodoo Music Experience at City Park in a New Orleans sweatshirt, stacking points with a bevy of young fans sure to geek out about his return at Buku this March.
Now racking up more than 65 acts in total, Buku 2014 also added Sleigh Bells, Chance the Rapper, Carnage, Griz, Clockwork, Dan Deacon, Classixx (live), Treasure Fingers, Young & Sick and more to its talent roster. Additionally, select performances announced this week will be available only in the VIP ticket holders’ suite aboard the S.S. Buku riverboat, docked on-site at Mardi Gras World.
Some of these exclusive sets — like one from Los Angeles beat scene prince the Gaslamp Killer and his special collaboration with the Preservation Hall Brass Ensemble featuring Khris Royal, as well as New Orleans’ own bounce diva Big Freedia‘s “Twerk Lesson” — certainly make a VIP package more interesting. A Bu-Katwalk interactive fashion show by local designers and DJ sets from Holy Ghost!, Miami Horror and DJ Soul Sister are also among the exclusive VIP experiences.
The third annual Buku Music + Art Project takes place March 21-22, 2014 across five stages set along the banks of the Mississippi River at Mardi Gras World (1380 Port of New Orleans Place). Tickets range from $120 – $400 for two-day passes, group rates available. For the complete line-up, travel packages, tickets and more information: www.thebukuproject.com.
