In true New Orleans fashion, music and advocacy are going hand-in-hand. Host of local radio show “Musicians, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes,” Laura DeFazio, is campaigning to raise money for a charity album to benefit one of the community’s most valuable resources: local musicians. WHIV 102.3FM has been dedicated to supporting human rights, social justice and New Orleans culture (plus, it’s home to OffBeat Radio). Her GoFundMe page is raising donations towards making a live album of highlights from the station’s first year on air. All proceeds will be split between the WHIV nonprofit– which raises awareness of HIV/AIDS and other public health issues– and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.
Since its inception in 1998, the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic has been a vital nonprofit to the community by providing comprehensive health care to the city’s musicians, performing artists, and cultural workers. The clinic runs a number of community programs including the Dancer Wellness Program to ensure the safety of local dancers, and the Parading Feet Initiative aimed at reducing foot pain in marching band performers and other paraders. Throughout the years, the clinic has teamed up with other music and health-related nonprofits to support community health. DeFazio has chosen to donate the album’s profits towards the clinic in honor of friend “Washboard” Lissa Driscoll, who passed away last year.
On the GoFundMe page, DeFazio says donations “will cover production, shipping of rewards, and licensing costs.” If Musicians, Mentors, and Barrooms reaches its goal of $2700, they will be able to produce a double album including a wide selection of local talent and special on-air performances.
“Musicians, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes” airs on WHIV 102.3 every Thursday from 7-9 p.m.
