Panelists include Allison Harnden, Nighttime Economy Manager, City of Pittsburgh; Scott Plusquellec, Nightlife Business Advocate, City of Seattle, Office of Film + Music + Special Events;  Joe Reilly, Nighttime Mayor, Iowa City Downtown District; Sarah Spurlock, ICMA-CM, Nighttime Economy (NITE) Manager, City of Fort Lauderdale, City Manager’s Office;  Adrian Tonon, Director of Customer Service, 24-Hour Economy Ambassador; and Mayor Michael E. Duggan’s Office, Department of Neighborhoods, City of Detroit. The panel will be moderated by Michael Bracy  of the Music Policy Forum.

The Music Policy Forum views music communities as interconnected ecosystems rooted in the intersection of the public, private, nonprofit and educational sectors. What does that look like in practice? A great example is the emerging discipline of nighttime economy advocacy, planning and management in the United States.

In a 2019 guest column, Ashlye Keaton and Gene Meneray of The Ella Project explained the perils of the New Orleans nighttime economy. “In New Orleans, there is an obvious void that needs to be filled around nightlife management. The congestion from 18 million tourists a year in a city with 400,000 residents has continued to create tensions around the nightlife and cultural economies. But, in order to support alternative ways to address some of these challenges, there has to be an informed understanding of what is actually needed.”

The panel will take place Friday at 1 p.m. CST. Live host Michael Bracy takes us on a national tour through the lens of practitioners/professionals with roles related to the nighttime economy.
