Motel Radio, the local surf-rock-inspired indie band that formed in 2014, announced an upcoming debut LP and a summer tour. The album, titled Siesta Del Sol in homage to a jukebox song they heard at a Texas bar, is set to be released on July 12.
Accompanying the announcement, Motel Radio’s new single, “Midnight”–complete with a beach-bum centric, psychedelia embracing lyric video–is a self-aware love song, combining a contemporary indie melody with an easygoing ’60s era drumbeat. “Midnight is about the intense desire to be around someone you’re falling in love with,” said frontman Ian Wells. “It’s about orbiting someone just to bask in their glow, even if it puts you in situations you don’t want to be in. It’s about the jealousy you experience when you can’t have someone to yourself.”
The band recorded Siesta Del Sol with producer Eric Heigle at Wix Mix Productions and at the band’s home studio in New Orleans. Fronted by two singers, Motel Radio’s guitarists create a calming ambiance with melodic riffs that accentuate the band’s soothing pop vocals. Siesta Del Sol marks the band’s first release since their 2016 EP, Desert Surf Films. Since then, Motel Radio has been touring the U.S. festival circuit, playing at local festivals like Voodoo and the New Orleans Jazz Fest, along with non-local festivals like Firefly and SXSW.
Motel Radio’s tour kicks off on June 21 at Tipitina’s. Summer Salt, a like-minded band that blends vocal harmony with pop and jazz, will join Motel Radio for the summer tour, though Summer Salt will not play with Motel Radio on June 21. The show at Tipitina’s is free and open to the public, as part of the venue’s Free Friday Concert Series. Also serving up local music that night will be Dave Jordan & The NIA.
