New Orleans’ Joy Theater will host a supremely funky night of music when Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Leo Nocentelli, Ivan Neville and Oteil Burbridge perform with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns on Saturday October 29. The group is billing itself as Monsters of Funk.
Colorado funk mainstays The Motet will open the show with their Mixtape 1979 show, which finds the band covering a variety of tunes that were released in 1979.
New Orleans music lovers may notice that the show is scheduled to take place on the second day of Voodoo Fest. The opening act comes on at 10pm, so those that stick around City Park through 11pm for Tool’s headlining set may be able to make it to the Joy in time to catch Monsters of Funk.
The news comes less than one week after Purdie–a bonafide funk, soul and R&B legend–announced his new project with Neville. The band, dubbed Bernard Purdie & Friends, also features Pimps of Joytime guitarist Brian J and New Mastersounds bassist Pete Shand. The group plans to release an album of original material next year, and will make their live debut at New Orleans’ upcoming Bear Creek Bayou Music Festival.
Tickets for Monsters of Funk at the Joy Theater are now on sale.
