On Friday, January 31, boogie-woogie revivalists the Mississippi Rail Company will kick off its 2014 singles project with a live set at Gasa Gasa. As opposed to releasing a new album outright in 2014, the New Orleans quartet plans to drop a new single every month of the year. Earlier this month, Relix premiered the band’s first single, the lively, swinging “Big, Bad Wolf.”
Pianist Travers Geoffray, a student of unheralded, New Orleans maestro Tom McDermott, serves as the Mississippi Rail Company’s lead conductor, and tenor saxophonist Robin Clabby, upright bassist Calvin Mourin-Martin and drummer Sam Shahin stoke its ride. In recent years, the up-and-coming ensemble’s hearty bustle and jangle has earned it a strong local following, and its 2012 debut album Coal Black Train has engendered the Mississippi Rail Company to fans across the region. Since its release the group has honed its chops on stage, touring in support of Louisiana favorites Papa Mali, the Revivalists, Flow Tribe, the Lost Bayou Ramblers, and the Rebirth and Soul Rebels Brass Bands.
Tickets to the Mississippi Rail Company’s January 31 concert at Gasa Gasa are $8.00 and available on the venue’s website. Gasa Gasa is located at 4920 Freret Street (map). Doors for the show will open at 9:00 p.m. In the meantime, dig this live clip of the band performing at d.b.a…
