Mirliton Festival: Photos

On Saturday, the Bywater’s Markey Park saw more than its usual audience of dogs and their owners, filling with folks for the 22nd-annual Mirliton Festival in celebration of the vegetable, known elsewhere as a chayote, and the Bywater neighborhood.

The musical lineup consisted of artists who live or perform in the Bywater: The Tumbleweeds, Tuba Skinny, Hurray for the Riff Raff, King James and the Special Men, Happy Talk Band, Little Freddie King and Guitar Lightning Lee, and Kermit Ruffins.

Food vendors at the festival featured mirlitons in their dishes, such as Curried Pumpkin and Mirliton Soup from Satsuma, Stuffed Mirlitons from Jack Dempsey’s, or mirliton popsicles from Meltdown.
