Miranda & The Beat, a band known for their electrifying garage-punk energy, has found a new home in New Orleans and now they are taking their show on the road. Their upcoming show at Gasa Gasa on March 16 isn’t just another tour stop; it’s a homecoming of sorts, marking the band’s transition from New York’s chaos to the underbelly of rock ‘n’ roll soul.
Sixties soul, garage, surf and psychedelic rockers Miranda and The Beat have been a band across the United States and last fall, OffBeat’s Veronika Lee talked to guitarist and vocalist Miranda Zipse about the band’s evolution.
What originated as a two piece in California became a four piece in Brooklyn, the B-52s-meet- Fu Manchu (or Thin Lizzy, if you prefer) rock n’ roll band now calls New Orleans home base. They released Can’t Take It last fall, a full studio album recorded in Berlin at King Khan Moon Studios where artists such as The Black Lips have cemented their sound. (The band prides itself on being both California cool and Brooklyn bite with a side of New Orleans flair.)
“I have no real clue about what the market is and what’s like super popular with kids or whatever,” said Zipse. “We just make shit that we like and I guess when you come from somewhere real, that’ll always resonate with people no matter the age. Always super cool when we play all ages shows or festivals to see younger kids throwing down and getting into it!”
The band’s album Can’t Take It features singles, “El Lobo Negro,” “Anxiety,” “Manipulate Me” “Can’t Take It” and “Earthquake Water” which caught the ears of writers at The Alternative, CREEM, New Noise Magazine, Ones To Watch, Rolling Stone and many more.
