The Greek community is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Holy Trinity Cathedral with a weekend of events that begins with the “An Evening on the Bayou” mini Greek Festival on Friday, October 10.
Holy Trinity, overlooking Bayou St. John, is the oldest Greek Orthodox Church in the Americas. Its annual spring Greek Festival is a well-known New Orleans event.
The “Mini Greek Festival” begins at the cathedral at 6:30 p.m. with an ouzo toast and will continue into the night with a fireworks show, traditional Greek music and dancing, and traditional Greek cuisine.
The weekend keeps rolling Saturday morning with the “Greeks on the Bayou” historical New Orleans bus tour, which departs from Holy Trinity and runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
At 7 p.m., there will be a formal dinner at Metairie Country Club, along with the premiere of the documentary film “150 Years of the Holy Trinity in New Orleans.”
On Sunday at 10 a.m., His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America and His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios will preside over a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity. Other Christian leaders will be in attendance, and a celebration will follow in the Hellenic Cultural Center.
According to Reverend Father George Wilson said in an email that the church’s community is excited to share “their history, culture, and love of New Orleans beyond the walls of Holy Trinity.”
