Three-piece band Miike Snow will be performing their catchy synth beats at Republic June 9. Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg, previously known as Swedish duo Bloodshy & Avant, were behind-the scenes, producing hits throughout the ’00s for mega-pop acts including Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Britney Spears. Britney may have provided throaty vocals and a video chockful of her signature writhing, but Bloodshy & Avant wrote and produced the hit song “Toxic.”
Native New Yorker Andrew Wyatt used to play with the A.M. and Fires of Rome before forming Miike Snow with Karlsson and Winnberg in 2007. They released their debut album, Miike Snow, in 2009 with positive critical reaction. Their first single, “Animal,” is similar to “Toxic” in that you are instantly pulled into the song with a catchy hook—other than that, “Animal” sounds like stripped down, sexually neutral pop anthem. It’s more for the head-nod and shoulder-shake than the bump & grind.
“Silvia” and “Black & Blue,” the other singles released from Miike Snow, are done in the same synth style, though “Sylvia” is more emo with slow, drawn-out vocals juxtaposed with a fast beat and an occasional piano solo. The singles are fun, but look forward to hearing “Plastic Jungle.” Its rough-around-the-edges beats are made even better with Wyatt calmly crooning “I wanna get slain.”
Tickets are $15 advance, $18 at the door. Experimental folk group Canon Blue will open.
