Who needs Christmas in July when you can have Mardi Gras in August?
That’s the thinking behind the Krewe of O.A.K.’s Mid-Summer Mardi Gras “pub crawl,” an annual parade that will celebrate its 30th year on Saturday, August 27.
In keeping with tradition, the party will begin at the Maple Leaf Bar at 7pm before heading down Oak Street at 8pm. Revelers will eventually make a left on S. Carrollton Aveune on their way to the final destination of Palmer Park.
Of course, Mid-Summer Mardi Gras is no ordinary parade. Anyone can join the fun, the krewe’s floats consist of decorated golf carts instead of tractor-pulled behemoths and, most importantly, it takes place in August. The party will also feature appearances by a number of other Mardi Gras staples, including the Krewe of Chewbacchus and the Organ Grinders.
Much like past editions of Mid-Summer Mardi Gras, this year’s theme–“Get Wet”–is a double entendre that can be interpreted in ways that are both tame and not so tame. Musician Jamie Bernstein will reign as King Robustus XXX, while Cara-Mia Noto, manager of Oak Street mainstay Jacques-Imo’s, will reign as Queen.
And while it may be tempting to assume that Krewe of O.A.K. takes its name from the street it calls home, that’s not exactly the case. Members of the krewe will tell you it’s an acronym that stands for “outrageous and kinky,” two words that will no doubt describe the celebration that goes down later this month.
