On January 28, The Recording Academy will present the 60th annual Grammy Awards, but it will be in the summertime when funk heroes The Meters get a Lifetime Achievement Award. As seen in Keith Spera’s report for the Advocate, the New Orleans ambassadors are in the company of fellow honorees The Beach Boys, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, Louis Jordan, Queen, Frank Sinatra and Tina Turner.
The Meters Nominated For Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame…Again!
According to Grammy.com, the Recording Academy is recognizing drummer Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste, frontman Art Neville, percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli and bassist George Porter Jr. as “among the founding fathers of funk.” In 2011, “Cissy Strut” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Formally known as the “Special Merit Awards,” the lifetime achievement recognition has its own ceremony this summer, though a date has yet to be announced.
