Meschiya Lake and calligraphy classes will come to the BK House this month.
Lake with her band The Little Big Horns will perform at the Historic BK House & Gardens on Sunday, January 29. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 6 p.m. It will be a BYOB event. Tickets are $30 for BK House members and $40 for non-members and should be pre-purchased at www.bkhouse.
The three-session Calligraphy Classes will return to the Vieux Carre Museum Saturday, January 14, Saturday, January 28, and Saturday, February 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. New Orleans photographer/artist Eugenia Uhl will lead the program with the hopes of teaching students about self-expression through calligraphy. The participation fee ranges from $85 for BK House members to $100 for non-members. Beginners are welcome. Registration is available at www.bkhouse.org.
In addition to these two events, an immersive play called The Family Line has been extended through January 29. Performance days and times vary and are available at www.bkhouse.org, where tickets may be purchased for $40 each, based on availability. This original performance was inspired by the histories of the BK House and the 1892 General Strike, a successful interracial organizing event that shut down the city for days before winning workers’ historical rights. It will be on the ground level of the Courtyard and surrounding buildings, making it accessible as the audience moves from one scene to the next.
All events occur at the Historic BK House & Gardens at 1113 Chartres Street, across from the Old Ursuline Convent.
Future programming will include a Mardi Gras-themed lecture, a John Boutté concert in February, a St. Joseph’s altar, Italian wine and food tasting event and a Yat Pack concert in March. Details about upcoming BK House events and membership information are available at www.bkhouse.org for those interested.
