Members of Tool Perform with Primus in New Orleans

Few bands are more adept at blending hard rock and psychedelia than Tool and Primus, so fans of that mix were understandably excited when the two acts decided to hit the road together this month. That tour came to a close last night at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, where Primus opened the show before Tool’s stunning headlining performance.

Despite their joint tour, the band’s haven’t collaborated on stage as much as many of their fans had hoped, especially considering the fact that Tool drummer Danny Carey filled in for Primus drummer Tim Alexander after he suffered a heart attack in 2014. That’s why it was a such a treat when Carey and Tool bassist Justin Chancellor sat in with Primus for a take on the Tales from the Punchbowl track “Southbound Pachyderm” during last night’s show. The collaboration marked a rare off-script moment for the tour, which saw Tool run through essentially the same career-spanning setlist every night.

Of course, that setlist does include a particularly sinister cover of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter,” along with Tool classics like “Ænema” and “Forty-Six and 2,” so there have been few complainers.
