This Thursday, May 28, at 7 p.m., Tipitina’s will be hosting the first ever “Marty Gras” benefit concert to honor the late Marty Hurley, who served as band director at Brother Martin High School for 37 years.
An esteemed educator, Hurley oversaw the development of many great musicians who went on to make names for themselves in the music industry, and his bands frequently won sweepstakes awards at regional concert and marching competitions.
Students of his attest to his great teaching ability, remarking on his balance between stern, no-nonsense instruction and encouragement that instilled confidence in one’s ability to play.
The musical lineup of the night features performances by Stanton Moore, Flow Tribe, The Bucktown Allstars, Clarence Johnson, and the Brother Martin Stage Band and Drumline.
Tickets are $25 and proceeds from the event go to the Marty Hurley Band Endowment at Brother Martin High School.
