Super Sunday falls on March 15 this year, and the Mardi Gras Indians will once again don their elaborately-beaded suits and gather around 11 a.m. at A.L. Davis Park.
Around 1 p.m., they’ll begin their annual parade through the neighborhood, performing songs, ceremonies, and chants.
Super Sunday 2015 parade routes are by no means set in stone, but the Mardi Gras Indian Council has announced a tentative route proceeding from the park onto Simon Bolivar Avenue, turning left onto Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, turning left onto Claiborne Street, and making a final left onto Washington Avenue to end up back at the park for music and festivities.
Expected performers include the Hot 8 Brass Band, the Troop Brass Band, the Stooges Brass Band, Big Al Carson, the B.R.W. Singing Group, D.J. Captain Charles, Jo Cool Davis, D.J. Jubilee, Young Men Olympian, Lady Buckjumpers, Step Up/Step Out, and more.
The Tambourine and Fan organization will also put on its annual parade at Bayou St. John.
The various tribes of Indians have been taking to the streets to greet one another for St. Joseph’s Day (Super Sunday is always the Sunday closest to the traditionally-Catholic holiday) since at least the early 1900s, and the celebration is one of the city’s most meaningful cultural traditions.
