James Booker was a regular performer at the Maple Leaf, and his likeness adorns the New Orleans venue’s stage to this day. So it’s no surprise that the Maple Leaf will host a birthday tribute to the legendary piano master, who would have turned 77 this year.
Scheduled for Booker’s actual birthday—December 17—the Saturday show will feature performances by frequent Booker collaborators Johnny Vidacovich and James Singleton. This extraordinary rhythm section will be joined by a rotating cast of pianists that includes Joe Krown, Tom Worrell, CR Gruver, Josh Paxton and more.
Billed as “Are You Classified: A Birthday Tribute to James Booker,” the gig will kick off early at 7pm and go until 9pm. A late show celebrating Walter “Wolfman” Washington’s birthday will follow at 11pm with Ivan Neville, Stanton Moore and Cristian Duque.
