Think you’ve got what it takes to bust beats with the best? Then head over to the soundCLASH Beat Battle: KickNSnares Edition. New Orleans’ monthly underground hip-hop showcase and networking event will be hosted at the Hi-Ho Lounge this Thursday, August 15 for a three round beat competition featuring James Jackson with DJ Kelly Green, Lyrikill and REi. Local MC/Producer Wes Beez and resident DJ RQ Away will host the event, which begins at 8 p.m.
REi, a local hip-hop artist who sings about his “Superdome State of Mind” will be performing alongside Lyrikill, who returns to New Orleans for his first show at home since relocating to Texas. OffBeat reviewed his mixtape A Time To Kill (2010) here and his follow-up album, More Heart, More Sole (2011) here, which won him a New Orleans Underground Hip Hop Award that year. Producers will be allowed to play one minute clips over the course of three rounds. The first round allows one beat, the second round two beats, and the third round is the ultimate challenge mixing three beats. The battle will be judged by Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer, Jerrin Howard (Wale ft. Miguel –Lotus Flower Bomb) and platinum selling producer, M16 (Playaz Circle ft. Lil Wayne-Duffle Bag Boys and Jeezy ft. Jay-Z and Andre 3000-I Do). The first place winner will receive $100 in cash, an official soundCLASH trophy, two hours in the studio at Inner Recess and more.
