The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), the region’s premier and Grammy Award-winning orchestra, is proud to announce two exciting concerts that celebrate accomplished women conductors and explore themes of identity and heritage in Black culture. From the highly anticipated debut of conductor Kalena Bovell to a live performance of the Oscar® and Grammy®-winning score from Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, the upcoming series promises to be a thrilling showcase of musical excellence and cultural significance.
On Thursday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m., the Orpheum Theater will come alive with the stirring melodies of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, under the baton of conductor Kalena Bovell. The program will also feature compositions by James Lee III and Jennifer Higdon, offering audiences a rich tapestry of emotions ranging from loss and grief to hope and resilience. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, known as his “Fate” symphony, will close the evening with its tumultuous and powerful crescendos.
The excitement continues on Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m., at the Mahalia Jackson Theater, where audiences will have the opportunity to experience the global phenomenon of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther in Concert. Conducted by Thiago Tiberio, the LPO will perform Ludwig Göransson’s acclaimed score live to the film, allowing viewers to relive the excitement of T’Challa’s journey to becoming the King of Wakanda. With its groundbreaking representation and profound cultural impact, Black Panther has captivated audiences worldwide, earning praise for its action-packed storytelling and powerful message of inclusivity and empowerment.
