Offbeat Magazine and the School of Music and Theatre Professions at Loyola University have joined together to produce a music-focused podcast, “Fridays Off…Beat,” recorded at the school and streaming on Offbeat’s YouTube channel.
The podcast begins March 29, with four new episodes focusing on “festival month” in New Orleans, and highlighting artists performing at the French Quarter Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
An earlier iteration of the podcast featured musicians Ivan Neville and Judith Owen, and those episodes are streaming now.
Ramsey and Jonathan McHugh, the Hilton-Baldridge Eminent Scholar/Chair in Music Industry Studies at Loyola, created the podcast to showcase local and national talent, with McHugh serving as the podcast’s host.
“I’m thrilled for Loyola to partner with Offbeat on this podcast,” McHugh said. “What started as a conversation between Jan and I about ways for Offbeat to showcase artists, and for me to share our amazing studios and music program here at Loyola, expanded into something terrific for everyone.”
Noe Cugny, Offbeat’s digital media producer and web specialist, will produce the podcast, recorded at Loyola’s Michael J. Early studio. Loyola students and faculty will participate in the making of the podcast as well.
“My goal is to continue promoting music in New Orleans, while always inspiring students,” McHugh said, thanking College of Music and Media Dean Sheryl Kennedy Haydel and Kate Duncan, director of the School of Music and Theatre Professions, for their help in bringing the podcast to fruition.

- March 29 – R&B artist Letrainiump, who is part of the Glbl Wrmg collective, discusses his career and recent show at the SXSW festival.
- April 5 – Barbara Hawkins, original member of New Orleans’s own The Dixie Cups, shares stories about the legendary band, reaching the 60th anniversary of its No. 1 hit, “Chapel of Love,” and being featured on this year’s Jazz Fest poster.
- April 12 – Singer-songwriter Anna Moss (HandMade Moments) shares details on her first solo record, “Amnesty,” which features appearances by the Rainbow Girls and Cyrille Aimee.
- April 19 – Galactic drummer Stanton Moore ruminates on his band, touring and his drumming academy, as he readies for his many performances during festival month.
