Thursday, May 30, The Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp will host a fundraising event to support operations of its annual summer programming for youth.
At the fundraiser, the New Orleans Arts and Cultural Host Committee and the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp will honor Ellis Marsalis with the 5th Louis Armstrong Jazz Pioneer Award. Marsalis, along with his quintet, will perform at the fundraiser. Also performing are Davell Crawford and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp Faculty Band.
Satchmo Summer Camp counts Jon Batiste, Trombone Shorty, Shamarr Allen, Gregory Agid, Funky Big Sam and more as its alumni. Founded in 1995, the camp has grown from a one-week affair to a three-week intensive program. According to its website, its mission is to “honor jazz in the place of its birth and to foster greater appreciation of this art form.”
The fundraiser takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 30, at the home of Sybil Morial (1101 Harrison Ave.). Tickets are available here and range from $1,000 (equal to a full scholarship for one student) to a standard $250 ticket to attend the event. Folks also have the option to donate directly to the Camp, if they are unable to attend.
