The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), who recently announced this year’s season, and Grammy-winning Lost Bayou Ramblers released a collaborative recording of their concert at the Orpheum Theater this past January 2023.
The project is a 12-track recording of the two groups’ world premiere collaboration of the LPO’s 2022-2023 season at the Orpheum Theater. It is available on all streaming platforms and combines some of Louisiana’s most prominent music genres. The LPO’s classical sound mixed with modern zydeco gives its listeners a twist on a Cajun jam band or symphony orchestra.
“Artists like the Lost Bayou Ramblers are deeply seeded within Louisiana’s musical identity and are vessels of our state’s cherished Cajun culture to the music industry at large,” LPO Executive Director Anwar Nasir said. The Ramblers were founded in 1999 by brothers Andre and Louis Michot and have since toured with Violent Femmes, been featured on Jack White’s American Epic and won a Grammy for their album Kalenda. They also played at the 2023 Cajun-Zydeco Concert Series back in June.
The LPO is the only full-time, collaboratively governed and operated orchestra in the United States. Though formed in 1991, the orchestra brings over 200 years of classical music styles to the stage, and the 67 musicians perform in five locations across Greater New Orleans. They also have an education program spanning 12 parishes.
“Collaborations like this honor the dynamic culture and traditions of Louisiana, and I am overjoyed that music lovers from all over can experience authentic Louisiana music through this memorable album,” LPO’s Music Director Laureate Carlos Miguel Prieto said.
The album includes “The Bathtub,” “Granny Smith” and “Cote Clair Waltz” and finishes with an encore. “It was a tremendous honor to make music with this phenomenal group of musicians and an even greater honor to share this music with the world,” Executive Director Nasir said.
