Southern backroads, with their tales of adventure and hidden gems, have long been the inspiration for many a musical journey. Among the myriad of sights and sounds that adorn these highways, one peculiar warning sign stands out: “Loose Livestock.” It’s from this iconic symbol that the name Loose Cattle springs forth, a five-piece roots rock ensemble hailing from the heart of New Orleans.
Led by the dynamic duo of Kimberly Kaye and Michael Cerveris, Loose Cattle embodies the spirit of Americana with their eclectic blend of Southern rock and folk influences. Described as “favorite Americana cowpunks in New Orleans” by OffBeat Magazine, the band’s music is a testament to their passion for storytelling and musical exploration.
With roots deeply entrenched in the rich soil of American history, Loose Cattle’s music navigates the highs and lows of human existence with a keen eye for detail and a steadfast commitment to social justice. Through their songs, Cerveris, Kaye, and their bandmates—Renè Coman, Doug Garrison, and Rurik Nunan—endeavor to amplify the voices of those often overlooked by society, championing a message of inclusivity and empathy.
The band’s diverse backgrounds and musical experiences form the foundation of their sound, blending together elements of rock, folk, and Americana into a tapestry of sound that is uniquely their own. From Cerveris’ storied career as a Broadway actor to Kaye’s journey from ska band roadie to LGBTQ activist, each member brings a wealth of talent and perspective to the table.
This winter, Loose Cattle retreated to the Louisiana swamp to record their highly anticipated follow-up to their Best Of The Beat-nominated debut album, “Heavy Lifting.” Produced by the acclaimed John Agnello and slated for release in 2024 on Single Lock Records, their newest offering promises to be a testament to the band’s evolution and artistic vision.
Comprised of seasoned musicians who have collectively collaborated with industry giants such as Alex Chilton, Bob Mould, and Allen Toussaint, Loose Cattle brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the table. Band founders Kimberly Kaye and Michael Cerveris, known for their double-barreled frontperson dynamic, infuse their music with a shared passion for artists like X, The Mekons, and Johnny Cash. Their soulful blend of blood harmonies and chiming guitars, backed by a swampy rhythm section and fiery fiddle, creates a sound that is uniquely Americana—a reflection of the forgotten voices of America.
Stay tuned for more updates on Loose Cattle’s upcoming record release and tour dates.
