Longtime Santana percussionist Raul Rekow passed away on Sunday. He was 61.
Rekow, who was inspired to take up the congas after seeing Santana at San Francisco’s Cow Palace in 1967, began playing with the band in 1976. With the exception of a two year hiatus in 1988-89, he remained an integral part of the popular Latin-infused rock group until his departure in 2013, appearing on 16 of Carlos Santana’s full band and solo records.
The famed guitarist released a memorial statement on his Facebook page that reads:
We mourn the loss of my brother, Raul Rekow. He was an integral member of Santana for 34 years and the heart beat of the band. His presence on the stage was one of power, grace, collaboration and joy. He redefined what it means to be a conga player. My heart goes out to his family. Raul, may you soar in heaven in the company of your Mom and Dad.
Santana last performed in New Orleans in 2014, when the group headlined Jazz Fest on Friday, April 25. Rekow did not perform with the band during that show.
