Over 50 elementary and middle school students from the Dolores T. Aaron Academy (DTA) will present their Second Annual Spring Concert on Thursday, March 10th. Also performing in the free concert will be the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, fresh from their February appearance at the 2016 Grammy’s.
The DTA band has grown substantially in the past decade. A project that began with seven students drumming on trash cans and buckets has since ballooned into a parade-sized outfit that includes multiple ensembles. In 2013, the band moved from makeshift trailers into a professional space, the Dolores T. Aaron building on Curran Blvd. Since opening the new band room, the DTA has hosted visiting musicians from across the United States and Canada, as well as multiple Grammy Award-winning artists.
The DTA provides a three-pronged program, offering students experience in Concert Band, Marching Band, and Traditional New Orleans Brass Band. The Spring Concert will feature the DTA Concert and Brass bands, and will also celebrate the local music community. The Tipitina’s Foundation, which helps provide instruments for DTA students, will be represented, as well as the Preservation Hall Foundation, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, The Jazz Foundation of America, and WWOZ Radio.
The Second Annual Spring Concert starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at the Dolores T. Aaron Academy at 10200 Curran Blvd. The event will be free and open to the public.
