On Monday’s episode of NBC’s The Voice’s Battle Rounds, New Orleans native, Casmè, went head-to-head with teammate Rio Souma. Singing a duet of “You’re All I Need to Get By” by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Casmè was able to beat Rio and John Legend named her the winner of the battle. Judge Gwen Stefani could not stop saying “Oh my God!” and told Casmè “From the moment the light flashed, I was like a zombie staring at you.” Judge Kelly Clarkson said the New Orleans native made her seem an “uncomfortable” singer in comparison and compared her to Diana Ross, saying the other contestants should watch out for her.
In her previous round, Casmè nailed Aretha Franklin’s “Baby I Love You,” securing a spot on John Legend’s team who was dazzled by her performance and style.
Coach and judge John Legend said of the performance, “I think this was the most thoroughly engrossing joyful, well put-together performance we’ve seen in the battles of any of the artists of any of the teams, it was just beautiful. Casmè is who she is and she walks int the room like that.” Legend had advised her teammate Souma to match Casmè’s energy and praised the pair for rising to the occasion.
Ultimately, Legend declared Casemè the winner and you can watch her performance below.
During the Battle Rounds, the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience. They are vying for their coach’s confidence and decision to take them to the next round.
After each vocal battle, the coach chooses which of his/her singers will advance to the next round of competition. The losing artist is available to be stolen by another coach or available to be saved by their own coach, but unlike any other season, the team coach can only hit their button to save an artist after it’s clear no other coach is going to steal the artist. If no other coach has attempted to steal the artist by the time he/she gets down the stage steps, the artists’ coach can push to save them. Each coach will have one save and one steal in the Battle Rounds. Artists who won their battle or were stolen by another coach will advance to the Knockout Rounds.
