Little Freddie King, King of Krewe du Vieux 2025, Appears in New Doc Series

OffBeat Lifetime Achievement Award-winner Little Freddie King, who will be King of the Krewe du Vieux Parade in 2025, appears in a new docuseries about New Orleans musicians. On episode 7 of In Their Own Voices, King reflects on his career, sharing stories from his early days in the Delta, the struggles and triumphs of his journey and the music that has defined his life.

Krewe du Vieux took to social media in November to decree King’s nomination. “To reign over the 2025 parade, the Krewe has tabbed legendary blues musician Little Freddie King…When confronted with the news of this latest and greatest honor, King Little Freddie King exclaimed, ‘I am deeply honored and humbled to be selected as the Monarch of the Krewe du Vieux. Through the many years of watching my musical friends ride pass me on Frenchmen Street, I never in a million years would have imagined me being up on the throne representing this outstanding Carnival organization. I am overwhelmed and with gratitude, all hail Krewe du Vieux!'” officials posted via Facebook.

The 85-year-old guitarist and vocalist from Mississippi and cousin of the famed Lightnin’ Hopkins, remains a torchbearer for three-minute, 12-bar, Delta-style blues. Having made New Orleans his home for many years, King’s authentic approach to the genre resonates with local audiences. On his last release, Things I Used to Do (2024), King blends storytelling with soulful homage to blues legends.

Other New Orleans musicians and industry personnel to appear on the In Their Own Voices series include Greg Lambousy of the New Orleans Jazz Museum and Joe Lastie. The series is directed and produced by vocalist and banjoist Carlos Childe.
